OUR ECONOMIC IMPACT
Valuable jobs and a proud future for youth — without aid. LET'S FIX THE FUTURE!
When we look ahead, we see chaos, deep social divides, and ever-rising inequality leading to poverty, deforestation, and climate change. One thing’s clear: more than ever, we need better business models that solve problems instead of creating them.
The FairChain and Moyee business is built around economic, social, and environmental impact. Our latest environmental update can be found in the CO2 Performance Ladder. We hope it inspires you to make a difference. Thanks for all your support over the years. Let’s fix the future!
Let's talk numbers!
Currently, only 10% of the value of your average cup of coffee stays in the country of origin — which, if you think about it, is absurd.
By investing in value-adding activities — roasting and packaging coffee at origin — we help coffee-growing countries evolve from agricultural to industrial economies. This creates valuable jobs and keeps five times more income in local hands, enabling communities to thrive through trade instead of aid. We believe coffee-producing countries must claim their rightful place in the value chain — after all, it’s their coffee.
To measure FairChain’s economic impact, we developed a simple framework with four key impact indicators:
🔧 108 JOBS SUPPORTED
We supported 108 value-adding jobs across our roasteries in Ethiopia and Kenya. That’s a big leap from just 18 jobs in 2015. These are direct results of building and maintaining local roasteries over the years.
☕ 450,000 KG BEANS EXPORTED
Last year, we roasted a whopping 450,000 kg of coffee in Ethiopia and Kenya — up from 2,180 kg in Ethiopia in 2015. This number reflects the volume of coffee exported after local roasting.
💸 €3,724,000 RETAINED LOCALLY
By roasting locally, we retain over 5x more value at origin than the industry average. In real terms, €3.7 million in profit and income stayed in Ethiopia and Kenya — versus just €19,000 in 2015.
📈 97.5 MILLION CUPS ENJOYED
If we measure FairChain awareness in cups, we’re now at 97.5 million cups of FairChain coffee consumed by our friends and fans — a huge leap from 76.9 million in 2020. We’d like to think we’ve sparked a real FairChain movement. Our goal? Inspire more people to make conscious choices with real impact.
UNDERSTANDING OUR IMPACT
WHY LOCAL ROASTING MATTERS
A staggering 90% of the value of a cup of coffee is exported away. Only 10% stays in the country of origin — and just 2% is actually value-added. FairChain’s goal is to rebalance this unfair equation to 50/50: 50% for them, 50% for us.
WHY EQUALITY MATTERS
In recent years, heavily bearded, tattooed micro-roasters have become the poster boys of specialty coffee. Love them or not, they deserve credit for helping kickstart the movement to de-commodify coffee. This so-called "Third Wave" of coffee focuses on not just quality, but impact at origin.
To us, quality and impact must go hand in hand. That’s the goal. But real impact requires many people to join the movement. We want to make high-quality coffee less elitist and more mainstream. For us, the Fourth Wave is all about blending quality with equality.
